Host–pathogen interactions determine the development, severity, and outcome of plant diseases and are influenced by host genetics, pathogen virulence, and environmental conditions. Plants possess complex defense mechanisms that include physical barriers, pattern recognition receptors, reactive oxygen species, hormone-mediated signalling, antimicrobial compounds, and systemic resistance. Pathogens counter these defences through effectors, toxins, enzymes, and mechanisms that manipulate host cellular processes. Understanding these interactions provides a foundation for developing durable disease-management strategies. Modern approaches, including marker-assisted selection, gene pyramiding, genomic selection, CRISPR-based gene editing, beneficial microorganisms, molecular diagnostics, and artificial intelligence, are expanding opportunities for disease resistance and early detection. Integrating genetic resistance with biological, cultural, and precision management practices can reduce crop losses, minimize chemical dependence, and improve agricultural resilience under changing environmental conditions.
